Greenfield, MA – Rev. George L. Cory, 82, died Friday (9-30-11) at Linda Manor Extended Care Facility in Leeds. Born on June 20, 1929 in Englewood, NJ, he was the son of George L. and Flavia (Shurtleff) Cory. He was a 1948 graduate of Englewood High School, a 1952 graduate of Bates College in Maine, earned his Masters of Divinity at Andover-Newton and was ordained in 1955. He served churches in New Hampshire, South Dakota, Missouri, Ohio and Massachusetts. He was a member of Robbins Memorial Congregational Church.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah (Friedrich) Cory with whom he celebrated 20 years of marriage on February 14th. He is also survived by six children: Margaret “Midge” Sheldon and companion Anthony Melkowski of Kansas City, MO; Bruce Cory and companion Barbara Gallant of Rochester, NH; Joanna “Jody” Conley and husband Christopher of Shawnee, KS; Elizabeth Curran and husband Richard of Whiting, VT; Emily Haskell and husband Scott of Marstons Mills, MA; and Matthew Cory and wife Cheryl of Worcester, MA; 21 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and his sister Mary Lou Sheffer of Redlands, CA.
He was predeceased by his first wife Jean (Chapman) Cory in 1990 and grandson Shawn Cory in 1982.
A service in celebration of George’s life will be held at Robbins Memorial Congregational Church on Saturday (10-08-11) at 2 PM followed by a reception in fellowship hall. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
