The Rev. Charles Merrill Allen Jr. died Sunday, Sept. 23, at Dow Rummel Retirement Village in Sioux Falls, S.D. He was 77.
Charles was born Feb. 4, 1935, in Watertown, S.D., to the late Charles Sr. and Ella (Hartman) Allen. He earned a B.A. from the University of South Dakota (‘57), where he was charter president of the national leadership and honor fraternity Omicron Delta Kappa and was selected for the Who’s Who among American college and university students in 1956-57.
He earned his Master of Divinity from the then-Newton Theological School (‘61) and served United Church of Christ congregations in Illinois and South Dakota. During his years of ministry, he attended six national denominational events and three national ecumenical workshops. Charles was a member of Myrtle Lodge No. 91, A.F.&A.M. in Centerville, S.D., for more than 50 years; served as president of the Association of Christian Churches of South Dakota from 1995-97; and was a member of First Congregational Church of Sioux Falls.
He enjoyed the South Dakota Symphony and was a longtime member. He also enjoyed going to movies, reading, and attending plays at The Guthrie in Minneapolis with his wife of 56 years, Carolyn (Pella) Allen.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents and a son, John Allen. In addition to his wife Carolyn, Charles’ survivors include a son, Lawrence Allen of Chicago; daughters Kaywin Bryant of Pasadena, Md., abd Kimberly Allen of Camdentown, Mo., a sister, Juanita Johnson of Watertown, S.D.; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
The family requests that memorials be directed to a mission project at one’s local church. Services were held Wednesday, Sept. 26, at First Congregational Church in Sioux Falls.
