Manager for Congregational Outreach, Baltimore, MD

Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) currently seeks a Manager for Congregational Outreach. The Manager for Congregational Outreach inspires and motivates Lutheran congregations to engage with LIRS though Refugee Sunday and the LIRS 75th anniversary in 2014. S/he promotes Refugee Sunday events, equips congregations with educational and promotional materials, and provides support through ongoing communications.

The Manager for Congregational Outreach represents LIRS at select events and cultivates a cadre of speakers for events across the country from among migrant and refugee leaders, church leaders, as well as LIRS and partner staff. S/he connects congregations and individuals to deeper engagement as volunteers, advocates, donors, and communicators. S/he contributes to promotion of anniversary events locally and nationally.

This is a full-time position that is expected to last approximately 10 months.


  1. Inspire, motivate, and equip synods, districts, and congregations to hold Refugee Sunday events.
  2. Cultivate a cadre of speakers and contribute to Refugee Sunday resources and promotional materials.
  3. Work with LIRS colleagues to leverage current connections and foster deeper engagement through a variety of action opportunities including advocacy.
  4. Contribute to local promotion of the 2014 Gala and coordinate with Gala planning team.
  5. Engagement in agency-wide activities and initiatives including all-staff meetings, working groups or task forces and implementation of strategic initiatives.
  6. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.


  1. Deep commitment to LIRS’s core values and ability to model those values in relationships with colleagues and partners.
  2. Bachelor’s degree and at least three years’ experience in Christian ministry, adult education, community organizing, external relations, volunteer management, or related field.
  3. Exceptional relational skills, with a track record of incorporating others, cultivating networks.
  4. Exceptional presentation and facilitation skills.
  5. Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  6. Proven ability to inspire action and motivate increasing levels of engagement.
  7. Proven ability to successfully design and implement outreach and marketing strategies with faith-based audiences.
  8. Familiarity with issues facing newcomers and the communities they live in, including access to services and integration related issues; commitment to refugees and immigrants.
  9. Familiarity with basic immigration-related legislation/issues.
  10. Appreciation and respect for Lutheran beliefs and values, church member motivations, and sensitivities.
  11. Skills in cultural competency and experience with and commitment to working in a very diverse workforce and constituency.
  12. Proficiency in time and project management.
  13. Ability and willingness to travel domestically up to 40 percent of overall schedule.
