LS124: A New Day, A New Way?  Thinking about the 21st Century Church

Project Option: LS124P, $75
Instructor: Rev. Bruce Bardon

Description: Simply put, the church is in a state of transition. On one hand, there is a longing to return to the "good old days," with packed sanctuaries, and booming children and youth programs. If we could only recapture that, some say, everything would be fine. On the other hand there's a lot of talk about "post-modern" this, and "emergent" that. Some say a new day is dawning and the church needs new models, a different paradigm. Together we'll think about the current state of the church.

Core Seminar: LS500 $275
Project Option: LS500P, $75
Instructor: Dr. Arthur Paul Boers
Dates: April 20 – May 15

Description: Church leaders inevitably face intense conflicts rooted in complicated relational, behavioral, familial and social dynamics. In this course we reflect on our vulnerabilities and discover the shape of responsible and faithful leadership. We investigate: how family systems understanding promotes non-anxiousness, developing self-awareness and self-understanding, current countercultural challenges in such conflicts, and spiritual resources for dealing with these challenges. We grow empowered as leaders and agents rather than victims.

Project Option: LS504P, $75
Instructor: Jeff Jones
Dates: June 1-26

Description: The old answers about what it means to be and do church don’t work any more. The new answers need yet to be discovered. Surprisingly one way to do this is through the recovery of the congregation’s traditional identity as a disciple-forming community. This seminar will explore what it means to be a disciple today, the role congregations can play in forming disciples and why playing that role is a key to personal and congregational vitality.

The primary methodologies in this course will be interpretive reading, online dialogue, and a critical contextual interpretation of the participant's congregational context.
