LS118: Brushing Up on the Old Testament

Description: This seminar is intended as a survey of the literature of the Hebrew Bible (OT), which is foundational to the Judeo-Christian tradition.  Additionally, the seminar examines the process and development of the Hebrew Scriptures in the overall context of Israelite history, from both a scholarly and a faith-community perspective.  Though generally broad in scope, this course will place special emphasis on the Pentateuch (Torah) and the Historical books.

LS123: Jesus in Islam: What do Muslims believe about Jesus Christ?

Description: This seminar is an in depth exploration of who Jesus is in the religion of Islam, how Muslims view Jesus, and will leave students with a much better understanding of Jesus' place in Islam compared to Christianity.  Topics covered are Jesus as a Prophet, the Trinity, and Jesus as the Son of God.  We will also read from verses in the Qur'an and what they mean about Jesus, including his birth, his life and his death.

Description: It is not enough (or acceptable) to give a teacher a Sunday school curriculum and leader's guide and hope for the best. Sunday school teachers and small group facilitators have to be taught how to teach Bible content and faith matters for life-long discipleship formation. This seminar is designed for those who are in charge of the Christian education program of the local church.

Description: This course will help pastors and others understand how to ground their leadership in prayer, discernment, and faith in a way that allows them to transform congregations into more spiritually vibrant congregations.  The course will be both practical and theoretical, exploring what spiritual leadership is, as well as pragmatic ways of leading a church through transformation.

Description: Robert Wuthnow estimates that there are six million fewer churchgoers in the United States, due to a new generation of young adults who are not making it to church. This is a crucial time for our congregations. In this seminar, we will discuss the sociological context of adults in their twenties and thirties, and imagine what the church can do to respond to, attract, and engage a new generation.

Description: Clergy ministering in congregations where a predecessor engaged in sexual or other misconduct frequently encounter a unique constellation of challenges and experiences. This seminar will help these afterpastors and their denominational support persons recognize these challenges, restore trust and integrity to ministerial relationships, identify persistent unhealthy patterns, intervene to promote healthy practice, strategically address difficulties posed by undisclosed or unknowable misconduct and promote individual clergy health and tenure.
