I am pleased to share one more update with you regarding the search for our next president. The search committee spent two full days on October 18 and 19 interviewing eight semi-finalist candidates for the position. Committee members and our consultant spoke with a number of references for each of these candidates, and we were eager to meet and talk with each of them. We were not disappointed. The interviews proved to be as illuminating and valuable as we had anticipated.
These eight candidates were selected from an outstanding and diverse pool. The search committee reviewed applications from twenty-five candidates eager to lead our school into its future. A third of our candidates were people of color, and more than one quarter were women. The applicant pool also was diverse in terms of faith traditions; nearly one third of the candidates identified as United Church of Christ, more than one third were from Baptist denominations, several were Unitarian Universalists, and several were United Methodists. More than half of our applicants were ordained.
After carefully and prayerfully considering each semi-finalist’s qualifications, references, and interviews, the search committee reached consensus on a group of finalists who have been invited to visit the Andover Newton campus during the week of November 3 - 9. We anticipate announcing the names of these final candidates no later than November 1 and will post information about each of them on the Andover Newton website (www.ants.edu). In the meantime, the search committee will be conducting additional reference checks, and our search consultant will conduct due diligence background checking. Throughout the search process the committee has pledged to protect the identity of candidates, and we will continue to address their candidacies with sensitivity and discretion.
The search committee looks forward to introducing you to our finalists very soon, and we hope that you will be available to meet them during the campus visits. A mechanism for providing feedback to the search committee following each candidate’s campus visit will be provided, and we encourage you to share your reactions with us. The campus visit schedule will be posted on the website on October 28, so that you can get these dates and meeting times on your calendar. In the meantime, we thank you for your ongoing support and assistance with this important effort.
Rev. Dr. Jim Sherblom
