Andover Newton E-News - November 20, 2007 - Fall Edition
NEWS
Dear Alums!
Autumn has showered its gold and fiery oranges over the lawns and buildings
of the campus, and while many still marvel at the silhouette of the
new Wilson Chapel against the blue sky, really everywhere you look on
the Hill, you see God’s bounty. Before we are catapulted into the
holiday season which will take us, careening, into the start of winter,
I want to stop for a moment to give thanks for all the work you do to
serve a troubled world. You are our reason for being, and we are proud
of your dedication, your service and your endurance. Please know that
the School is here for you as a resource in a variety of ways and we
will do our best to serve you.
There is much to celebrate here.
Davis now has three “smart” classrooms, with fully integrated
IT systems which allow easy projection of PowerPoint, DVDs, and even
images directly from books. But perhaps even more wonderful than the
technological updates, Davis now has windows on the rear wall, allowing
daylight to flow in over the new desks and new carpet! All this
thanks to the generosity of a former student who figured a classroom
without any windows was perhaps NOT the most enjoyable learning environment!
The bookstore has relocated in part of Noyes Hall, but Joyce
Simon still presides over it. She is anxious to meet your needs and
desires, so if there are special materials you are seeking, let her
know and she will do her best to get them for you. There is already
a wide array of clerical garb and materials for communion as well as
the usual displays of books. It’s a wonderful resource!
The other half of Noyes is now a
beautiful student lounge and we have a food cart which sells sandwiches,
salads, coffee and fruit all day, so students (and staff!) can get a
snack or a meal at any time, and not just when the refectory is open.
And, mercifully, Appleton Chase now has all new beds and bed frames! We also have several beautifully appointed guest rooms available at way below the going rate for a hotel room. These changes were made possible through the generosity of our alums and friends, and we invite you to try them out!
Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you head into the demanding but wonderful Advent season! Please make one of your New Year’s Resolutions to come back to Andover Newton to share with us your experiences , to take in a concert (March 31, Spectrum Singers, 8 pm, free), to attend one (or all) of the Great Preaching series, to attend our Gala (April 24), Convocation (May 15) or Graduation (May 17). In addition, please watch the website for an entirely new look and for updates about a Mission Ingathering scheduled for May 10th!
Yours sincerely,
Priscilla Deck
Vice President for Institutional Advancement
Andover Newton offers Bicentennial
Preaching Program
As part of our 200th anniversary celebrations, Andover Newton is offering
a major program on great preaching in America. While some of the most
widely recognized names in American preaching will participate, this
series will also highlight some new and emerging voices we believe represent
the future of the art.
In January Andover Newton will offer a special two part program entitled:
“Is preaching still relevant? A dying art or voice of hope for the
future?” Each of the two programs will feature a nationally recognized
preacher followed by a special panel to engage the preachers on their
craft and the relevancy of preaching in the 21st century.

say about how its faith and experience are leading to renewed and revitalized
congregations. At the workshop you will:
- learn ways in which the rediscovery of the ancient practices of the
church is a key to renewed vitality;
- explore key dimensions of the leadership that enhances renewal;
- discover ways in which you can foster your own growth as a renewed

The Volunteer Initiative Program
Are you looking for a way to give back to the Andover Newton Community?
Consider helping Andover Newton model the role, and importance, of volunteers
in ministry.
We are looking for persons who have the following skills; computer, organizational, filing, research, mechanical, painting, plumbing, office procedures, secretarial, public relations and communication to name but a few. The list is not exhaustive. Whatever your interest and skill may be we can put them to use.
In addition we are eager to have volunteers whose interest is in gardening assume responsibility for one or more of the flower beds that are around the campus (a great project for a local church!).
